Recorder's Office

The elective office of County Recorder was the first local office created by the Constitution of the State of Indiana in 1816.

Roles and Responsibilities

It is the primary duty of county recorders to record instruments submitted for recording and maintain those records for perpetuity. Documents for statistical record keeping purposes fall into four categories:

1. Deeds and other Conveyances
2. Mortgages and other Liens and their Releases
3. Miscellaneous Documents
4. Uniform Commercial Code Documents 

Marshall County records are all digitized with indexing complete back to 1960.

Mission

Marshall County Recorder’s Office mission is to accurately record and preserve the history of our wonderful county. We desire to do that with the latest technology, the professionalism and the courtesy that our customers deserve.

Per IC Code 36-2-7.5 this statement must appear on any document executed in the state of Indiana:

“I affirm, under the penalties for perjury, that I have taken responsible care to redact each Social Security Number in this document, unless required by law.”

The Recorder’s Office staff WILL NOT search public records or give legal opinions.  If you know the recording information, you may request a copy from our office.  Otherwise, you may come in and use one of our public computers.

In order to record a properly prepared deed or conveyance, it must first be submitted to the Marshall County Assessor’s Office and the Marshall County Auditor’s Office.  The Assessor’s Office may require a waiver/sales disclosure form to be filed with the document when recording.

It is the preparer’s responsibility to comply with State Law. It might be best to seek legal counsel.  The Recorder’s Office records documents as presented; therefore, documents could be subject to rejection or may be required to be re-recorded at an additional cost to the presenter.  Please keep in mind the Recorder’s Office does not prepare documents nor provide legal advice.
